Good Posture, Going beyond anti-ageing
The article in the FT Weekend, 27/04/24 by Helen Barrett, Going beyond anti-ageing, is so right to say that good posture is anti-ageing. A person with good posture, no matter what age, looks better, thinner and their clothes hang better. the health benefits are many as her expert. Steven Weiniger, relates. This is a case of vanity and health meeting. What looks good is good. I would add that it is not just posture, but also movement that needs to be youthful, fluid and coordinated.
The Alexander Technique teaches posture and movement and has been doing so since the beginning of the 20th century. Not by doing exercises, but by gentle hands on guidance which, by encouraging a release of muscle tension caused by our bad habits, results in easy, natural good posture and movement. So much neck/shoulder/back pain is the result of poor posture and muscle tension and can be improved through learning a better way. In lessons, the individual learns to be aware of themselves in the usually mindless activities such as sitting, standing, bending and walking. Activities that underlie everything we do and without awareness, reinforce our bad habits.
A more mindful and grounded attitude is developed which leads to her second anti-aging recommendation, good mental health. Mind and body are one.
