Looking Good in Old Age – How the Alexander Technique Can Help (really)
Yesterday while listening to the News at lunchtime on BBC Radio 4, I heard an interesting snippet. Some tech billionaire, probably in California, is spending 2 million dollars on looking young. And he is only in his 40s. This led to discussion of how to look younger without spending much. The word posture was never mentioned, but part of the advice that followed was to have better posture. The old person’s slump, hunch and shuffle is so aging and bad for the health. But don’t go for the sergeant major approach – chin up, shoulders pulled back hard, chest overly lifted, knees locked back. Those of you who have had Alexander lessons know the way to go. Crown of head is high, head/neck is well oiled, shoulders are wide but relaxed, torso/ribs are wide, legs not rigid. Good posture is not stiff and held; if it is, it is not good posture. What’s good for one’s vanity is good for health. At least in this case.
